Old Music Tuesdays: Tooth and Nail Video Volume One
Tooth and Nail Records is an independent record company based in Seattle, Washington. Brandon Ebel, its founder, had worked for the Christian record label Frontline but was troubled that many of the underground Christian bands that he loved could not find a label or find distribution. In 1993, he founded Tooth and Nail Records to fill this void. His label specialized in hardcore, punk and indie music created by people who identified themselves as Christians. These were bands that were often rejected by the Christian community because of the “Satanic” style of music they played, but were also rejected by the mainstream music scene because of the members’ Christianity. They found a home on Tooth and Nail, and many youth group kids all over the USA (and the world) heavily identified with them. I was one of these youth group kids, and Tooth and Nail remains my favorite record label to date.
In 1995, Tooth and Nail released two VHS music videos. They’re out of print now, but you can probably find a copy on eBay or at a used record store. (I’m not selling mine.) Volume One features hardcore, punk, and indie videos, which I’ve listed below. All the music videos have been re-released on DVD, but I prefer the original VHS tapes for the skits in between songs and the intimate look at a mom and pop record shop. I couldn’t find uploads of the skits on YouTube, but the videos are embedded on a YouTube playlist, below. Several musical genres are presented here, so if you don’t like a song, just skip to the next one. Enjoy!
Strongarm: Hardcore from Florida. The members went on to form Further Seems Forever
Danielson: Indie rock from New Jersey. Daniel attended my alma mater!
Morella’s Forest: Female fronted dream pop from Dayton, Ohio.
MxPx: You know this band. Don’t even pretend that you do not.
Plankeye: Alternative CCM rock from California.
Starflyer 59: Riverside’s long running and long suffering shoegazing favorite.
Crux: Political punk rock from Portland, Oregon.
