Old Music Tuesdays: Crosses (†††)

Crosses (†††) is the witch house side project of Chino Moreno (deftones), Chuck Doom, and Shaun Lopez (Far). The band was formed in Los Angeles in 2011. If you’re unfamiliar with “witch house“, it’s an occult-themed dark electronic music genre with hop hop, goth, industrial, and ambient undertones. (Personally, I think both the electronic and metal music genres are getting out of hand with the hyper-specific subgenre labels. Is it just me?) Pitchfork describes Crosses as witch-house; Chino Moreno has shied from the term. The music and lyrics don’t really fit nicely into the label as the Crosses project definitely isn’t occult-themed.
Chino Moreno and Shaun Lopez were childhood friends and neighbors, and both have appeared as guests on each other’s projects. I guess it was a matter of time before they started recording together. To date, they’ve released two EPs for free, a free single, and a full-length album. Click the links to download some free music or buy the album. The album is mostly the same songs from the EPs plus a handful of new tracks, including the excellent Bitches Brew.
I’m going to go see them live later this month, so I’ll follow up this post with a concert review after it happens. Today, since it’s April Fool’s Day, I wanted to share my favorite Crosses song, This is a Trick. If you’re into electronic, hip hop, or goth music, check it out! I’ve embedded it above, for your convenience.
Lyrics
Something’s changed in your face I notice
A different sparkle in those crazy eyes
Your unmistakable charade I know it
Always tricks me every time.
A million tears, a trillion times
I’ve seen that glaze and glitch in your eyes.
This is a trick
Hello, hello, I know
What this really is
I know hello, hello, hello
What’s the matter with the transformation?
What you’ve been practicing for days and nights.
While I’m watching the creation of this
awful creature that no one likes.
A million tears, a trillion times
I’ve seen that glaze and glitch in your eyes.
This is a trick
Hello, hello, I know
What this really is
I know hello, hello
This is a trick
Hello, hello, I know
What this really is
I know hello, hello.
I’m so excited I can hardly take it.
This is a trick
Hello, hello, I know
What it really is
I know hello, hello,
It’s just a trick
Hello, hello, I know
What it really is
I know hello, hello.
