Old Music Tuesdays: Danzig

Glenn Danzig was the frontman for the legendary horror punk band the Misfits, and then he left and became even more legendary. I’ve noted before that my favorite musicians are those who are not tied to one genre. Glenn Danzig is such a musician. He started his music career writing punk music with the Misfits, but then moved on to metal with his outfit Samhain. In 1987, he started his group Danzig and incorporated elements of blues, industrial, and even classical music into his albums. One theme that remains the same across all his projects, however, is an interest in horror and the macabre.
The song I’ve included this Old Music Tuesday is called 777, and it’s off his second album released under the Danzig moniker. I love this song for its bluesy feel and the slide guitar. It goes from being very haunting and slow to toe-tapping and fun almost instantly, but it works!
The lyrics are a bit vague. I’ve heard commenters say the song is about the coming of Armageddon and the end of the world, and others say it’s about Adam and Eve’s first son, Cain. He murdered his brother and then was cast away from God’s presence. I think either interpretation works as the lyrics are pretty sparse. What do you think?

Lyrics
Comes the light
Comes the flame
Comes the child who is
Come the sword
Come the flame
Come the end of bliss’s reign
Come the dawn
Come the day
Wake the softest soul up
Come the fire
Come the change
Lick the rose of Venus’ shame
Come the night
Come the death
Down the path out of
Seven
Seven
Seven is my name
Seven come
And seven go
And seven
Still remain, yea
Seven
Seven
Seven is my name
Seven on the grandest scale
And seven
Still remain, yea, remain
And the light
And the flame
Take the path on
And the night
And the day
Fall upon the knees of
And the child
In the flames
Casted out of Eden
Seven
Seven
Seven is my name
Seven come
And seven go
And seven
Still remain, yea
Seven
Seven
Seven is my name
Seven on the grandest scale
And seven
Still remain, yea, yea
Seven on
Seven on
Seven on
Remain, yea.
