Old Music Tuesdays: Metallica trilogy

All forms of media, especially books and movies, revisit old themes and storylines and produce sequels. Sometimes musicians revisit their old song ideas and come up with a new twist on an old idea. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. When it works, the results can be quite impressive.
The following is Metallica’s Unforgiven trilogy. The specific meanings of the songs are obviously open to interpretation. Some regard these songs as about love lost, and others interpret them as about battling substance addiction. Whatever your interpretation, they all contain themes of sadness, regret, and struggle.

Metallica’s The Unforgiven Trilogy
The Unforgiven (from 1991’s Metallica)
What I’ve felt What I’ve known
Never shined through in what I’ve shown
Never free Never me
So I dub thee unforgiven.
The Unforgiven II (from 1997’s Re-Load)
What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you
Yeah
What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, ’cause I’m the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?
The Unforgiven III (from 2008’s Death Magnetic)
How can I be lost
If I’ve got nowhere to go
Search for seas of gold
How come it’s got so cold
How can I be lost
In remembrance I relive
So how can I blame you
When it’s me I can’t forgive?
