Old Music Tuesdays: Pretty Girls Make Graves

In my last Old Music Tuesdays post, I wrote about These Arms Are Snakes, a post-punk/post-hardcore group from Seattle. I figured I’d share another Seattle group with you today.
Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in 2001, and they took their name from The Smiths song of the same name. Their early music was heavily influenced by At the Drive-In, which was a mixture of punk rhythms coupled with shouting/rapping verses. I’ve included the first song I ever heard by the band so you can hear it for yourself. (It’s the first song off of their debut record, and I still quite enjoy it.)
The later music was more melodic and bass-driven, and I tend to like the later stuff more. I’ve included an Amazon link so you can check out their last album before they broke up.
Unfortunately, I never got a chance to see them play live. The members went on to join/form groups such as Jaguar Love, The Cave Singers, and Moonrats. If you own the game Rock Band 3, you can play their song Something Bigger, Something Brighter.
Pretty Girls Make Graves didn’t stick around very long, but in my opinion it was long enough to make their mark. If you enjoy the Seattle indie scene, or if you’re a fan of At the Drive-In or Kill Sadie, give them a listen!
Lyrics
Do you remember when
We couldn’t put it away?
Do you remember when
We couldn’t put it away?
Do you remember what the music meant?
(To you?) (To me?) (To you?) (To me?)
Do you remember what the music meant?
Life’s complications and frustrations
They disappear when the music starts playing
I found a place where it feels alright
I heard a record and it opened my eyes
Do you remember when we couldn’t put it away?
Do you remember what the music meant?
And nothing else matters
When I turn it up loud
There was the one definitive moment
Well, did it mean it to you?
There was that one definitive moment
When it was something new
Life’s complications and frustrations
They disappear when the music starts playing
I found a place where it feels alright
I heard a record and it opened my eyes
Did it mean it to you?
Do you remember when
We couldn’t put away?
Do you remember when
We couldn’t put it away?
Do you remember what the music meant?
And nothing else matters
Yeah nothing else matters
When I turn it up loud
Yeah nothing else matters
When I turn it up loud.

August 2015: This Site is Moving!
Hey all,
Thanks for reading my blog at Digital Tyrants! Over the next month or two, I’ll be transferring all my posts to www.binarygod.com. I originally had this blog at that address, but I moved it here for a number of reasons. Well, none of those reasons make sense anymore so I’m moving it back to streamline and tie my art to my blog better.
What does this mean for you? Make sure you update your bookmarks and if you’re a subscriber, make sure you subscribe to the new (old) website! The “Subscribe” form is located in the site’s footer.
Thanks for your support and for reading!
