Old Music Tuesdays: Werewolves

The month of October is devoted to horror-themed songs. So far I’ve shared tunes featuring vampires and the deadites; this week I’m tackling werewolves. I had two songs in mind, but I couldn’t decide on which one to post. In the end, I chose both! Though they’re both about werewolves, the songs and bands are very different.
First up is Queens of the Stone Age’s Someone’s in the Wolf. QOTSA is a stoner rock band from the high desert of California, outside LA. Of all the songs I’ve shared/am going to share this month, QOTSA is the most famous. They were huge in 2002 due to their (excellent) album Songs for the Deaf. Superstar Dave Grohl played the drums on this album. (You may have heard of him?) Now, they’ve sort of faded a bit, which I think is tragic because they’re still putting out quality records. Their latest outing was their best since 2002, but it sort of came and went with a whimper.
The video I’m sharing is taken from their 2005 album Lullabies to Paralyze. It’s a long, repetitive song, however it never bores. The repetition acts as buildup instead of monotony. I’m sort of cheating, as the song is more about fairy tale wolf characters rather than legitimate werewolves. However, it’s my blog so I can break my own rules as I see fit! The video is a low-fi live action fairy tale for adults. That’s the best way I can describe it. Enjoy!
Lyrics
Once you’re lost in twillights’s blue
You don’t find your way, the way finds you…
Tempt the fates, beware the smile
It hides all the teeth, my dear,
What’s behind them…
So glad you could stay
Forever
He steps between the trees, a crooked man
There’s blood on the blade
Don’t take his hand
You warm by the firelight, in twilight’s blue
Shadows creep & dance the walls
He’s creeping too..
So glad you could stay
Forever.
The second song I’d like to share is from Buffalo’s Every Time I Die. I have previously written about Every Time I Die for my Old Music Tuesdays series here. They’re one of my favorite hardcore bands, and their latest album, From Parts Unknown, might just be their magnum opus. They haven’t really put out a bad record, so check them out if you like what you hear.
The video I’m showing is for the song We’rewolf. I was fortunate enough to meet the band and see them perform this song in 2007 during a FuelTV taping in Los Angeles. This one is a legitimate werewolf song, but less Wolfman and more Teen Wolf. As the QOTSA song is creepy and dark, the ETID song is about a party. Wanna party with them? Check out the video and tap your toe to the beat.
Lyrics
turn the lights off, turn the lights off, your daddy better lock up his girls.
say a prayer boy, call on the cross because you ain’t got no more when the music comes on.
board up the doors and windows and keep your crying under your breath.
I smell a drop of beer in a ten gallon tank and I’m moving in for the kill.
yea. in the wild kingdom you don’t live until you’re ready to die.
which one of you sons of bitches is gonna make me feel alive?
which one of you motherfuckers is gonna get inside my heart (attack)?
it’s a full moon, denim is tight, and my flannel shirt is freaking out.
run for your life, cover your eyes, I don’t want you to see me party this hard.
I’ve got a bone to pick with the morning sun and the first last call
but I didn’t put my hair in a pony tail for nothing,
so if I’m going home alone I ain’t going at all.
yea. I’m the wild kingdom you don’t live until you’re ready to die.
which one of you sons of bitches is gonna make me feel alive?
which one of you motherfuckers if gonna get inside my heart?
is gonna give me a heart attack?
look away it’s too much to bear.
I’ve been bitten by the party animal.
save yourself.
save yourself.
tell my baby that I love her so.
don’t cry. don’t cry.
I gave the world one hell of a time and I don’t regret a thing except for the time that I got caught givin’ it.
I never thought it would take. I had thick blood and cynical skin.
to where are you supposed to escape, from the creature is lurking inside of you?
